Sure enough, Alabama emerged from a spectacular 15 minutes of football—featuring a 95-yard kickoff return and a combined five touchdowns—with a 45-40 victory, dashing the Tigers’ dream of their first national title in 34 years. That’s allowed the team to cash in on an NBC broadcasting deal Falling off the list this year is Texas Tech. “We look around often, and our peers have had a bunch of success and are doing a lot of similar, really awesome things,” says Neff, “so it’s not like Clemson is the trendsetter across the whole spectrum by any stretch.”It's a sensible approach, and one very much grounded in truth: The nation’s most valuable programs still generate nearly twice as much money annually. This year, Texas A&M again leads the way with $147 million in average football revenue. Although Florida’s athletic department receives income from student fees ($2.5m) and state support ($1.9m), it would turn a profit of over %6.9 million without those funds. The same is true on an even larger scale at Penn State:, where there are 8 more men’s and women’s teams that at Florida:The $43 million surplus left from football and men’s basketball after covering the other sports also covers coaches salaries ($9.4m), student aid ($11.1m), recruiting ($967k) and gameday expenses ($7.5m).

This represents a substantial increase in revenue over a two-year period, with only 13 schools' sports programs reaching $… The difference between Cal and Penn, however, is about $44 million in football profit and another $3.1 in men’s basketball profit. But what seemed like a disappointment at the time turned out to be just the beginning of a remarkable dynasty. In the three-plus seasons since, the Tigers have made two title game appearances, taking their revenge against Alabama twice over, and have dropped just three games total. Currently, Kristi is finishing two books: e "Balancing Baseball: How Collective Bargaining Has Changed the Major Leagues," which will be published by McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers, and "Saturday Millionaires: Why College Athletes Will Never Be Paid and Other Uncomfortable Truths About the Business of College Football." With those expenses included, it takes student fees, alumni contributions and other revenue from sources like licensing and advertising to allow UCF to turn an overall profit in the athletic department.By contrast, Ohio University does not make enough from football or men’s basketball to cover the losses by other sports:Ohio is already operating at a deficit before you add in coaches salaries ($4.1m), recruiting ($380k), gameday operating expenses ($2.6m) and student aid ($6.3m).Florida Atlantic is in even worse shape, because they’re not even turning a profit on football:Add in coaches salaries ($2.8m), student aid ($4.0m), recruiting ($235k) and gameday expenses ($2.5m) and there’s over $17 million to cover.Schools in AQ conferences are not immune. Clemson has shown the path to the top 25: All it takes is a couple of championship game appearances and timely wins over the most dominant team in the history of the game. Our list of college football’s most valuable teams is ranked by average football revenue across the 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons, the three most recent for which financial data is available (2018 numbers won’t be reported until the end of the year). It doesn’t matter if we’re looking at a team from Conference USA or the SEC. Once you add in coaches salaries ($11.9m), student aid ($11.1m), recruiting ($1.0m) and gameday operations ($9.5m), you can see why the school might have been forced to look at making cuts. Accordingly, I pulled numbers for several of the top student fee recipients, both in terms of dollars and percentage, an SEC school, a Big Ten school and Cal-Berkeley because of their recent fundraising efforts to save five sports.
