The popular River Road market closed in March due to the lockdown but was unable to re-open.In a letter to traders last month, Frank Nash and Kevin Kelly from owners Charfleets said: “It has become clear the Dagenham Sunday Market in its present form does not allow social distancing to be maintained.”And now some of the much-loved market stalls will be selling their wares in nearby Romford on Sundays instead as part of a pilot scheme. The market will open on Sundays from this weekend (July 19) as part of a trial launched by Havering Council.A council spokesperson said the initiative comes after the “successful” reopening of the market following the lifting of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. The trial begins on Sunday, July 19 and will also see new stalls to shop at.The council said a survey of market shoppers found more than 80 per cent were in favour of it opening on Sundays.Council leader Damian White said: “Romford Market is the jewel in the crown for Romford, so I am excited that we can open this historic location on Sundays.“Given its outdoor setting and the already successful social distancing measures we have put in place, Romford Market is the perfect place for people to continue to shop locally and support small businesses, whilst staying safe and Covid-secure.“The new Sunday opening hours will make it easier for shoppers to visit the market in their free time, providing a much-needed boost to both existing and new traders, as well as the surrounding shops and venues.”Romford Market, which is normally open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, has had safety and social distancing measures such as two metre paint markers in place since its post-lockdown reopening.Clothing, toys, gadgets, sweets and furniture are among the items that can be bought there, as well as street cuisine for people to enjoy. The council also recently announced all of its car parks - including Havering Town Hall and Angel Way which are near to the market site - and on-street parking bays will be free on Sundays from August 9. Dagenham Sunday Market announced on their Facebook page that they are designing a mobile app so that regular customers can still buy from their favourite stall owners.
Last Wednesday (June 3), the market gave the sad news that they do not plan to reopen after the coronavirus lockdown. Dagenham market is permanently closed. The site of a former power station in Dagenham is to become the home of London's Smithfield Market.
Dagenham Sunday Market has announced it will be permanently closing due to being unable to meet social distancing regulations. Charfleets Markets, the company which operates the market, in River Road, Barking, says it has explored “every possible option” but will be unable to comply with social distancing rules that dictate people must stay two metres away from each other.Thousands of people attend the market each week, and Charfleets estimates it would have to reduce to number of traders by 40 per cent to comply with social distancing requirements. In a letter to traders, Charlfeets said: “It has become clear the Dagenham Sunday Market, in its present form, does not allow social distancing to be maintained.“Taking into account that we do have an unusually high number of visitors for a market … to comply with social distancing, we would need to create extremely wide pedestrian walkways, removing complete aisles of stalls and containers.”The letter went on to say: “It is simply not viable to open a smaller and less attractive market with the huge costs involved in both the running and the reconfiguration of the layout.“We now know that waiting for social distancing to end is not an option and we are aware traders need to plan their future, so a decision is needed.”Charfleets called the closure “without doubt, the most devastating news we have had to deliver in 34 years of trading,” and thanked their stallholders.Dagenham Market had been open since 2002 and was popular with people hoping to pick up a fashion bargain, including many celebrities such as Stacey Solomon and TOWIE stars including Georgia Kousoulou.Last year the BBC made a documentary about the market called Good Morning Dagenham.Social media users were quick to share their disappointment at the news. Can’t believe Dagenham Market has been permanently closed ?
