Ogham inscriptions are also found in Britain, largely in areas of post-Roman Irish colonisation in Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Scotland, but archaeologists have excavated examples from Roman Silchester and Orkney. The stone is a large cross slab currently housed inside a lovely historic church, with a full-size replica outside in the village square where it may have stood for centuries (complete with iron jougs or collar for punishing troublemakers!). In Scotland, a number of inscriptions using the ogham writing system are known, but their language is still the subject of debate.
Text by Imelda Kehoe. Today there are roughly 400 surviving stones featuring proper names, ancestral and tribal affi liations, and Latin words. Ogham stones occur throughout the areas of Britain that border the Irish Sea, from Shetland and Orkney in the north, through Scotland, the Isle of Man and Wales, down to Devon and Cornwall in the south. Multi-Stone Other Cuts All Rings. Either I was looking at the wrong stone or its condition has deteriorated severely since it was examined by Okasha and Thomas in the early 1990s.The putative Ogham inscription is extremely doubtful: "There seemed to me to be faint and doubtful traces of Oghamâbut nothing that could be regarded with any confidence" (Macalister 1945 p.457); "There is no sign of any ogham text today and in my view this can be disregarded" (Okasha 1993 p.23).The following conventions are used in the transcription of Latin, Runic and Ogham inscriptionsâ¯:In order to see the Latin Epigraphic Letter Sideways I ( In other words, to change N from the third to the fifth letter would also mean changing its symbol from three strokes to five strokes. Another great place to see a collection of ogham stones is Dunloe Co. Kerry. Ogham is sometimes referred to as the "Celtic Tree Alphabet" as a number of the letters are linked to old Irish names for certain trees. Thomas (1994) dates them all to the 5th century, whereas Okasha (1993) dates them to any time within the 5th to the 8th centuries. There are about 34 confirmed Ogham inscriptions on pillar stones, symbol stones, cross slabs, and natural rock faces, as well as five Ogham inscriptions that have been found on portable artefacts : See Forsyth, K.; "Abstract: The Three Writing Systems of the Picts." I | H-INSSI | LOAOARUIN" The Ogham inscription is unintelligible, but may comprise two personal names followed by either Old Irish Ogham inscription is written with bind oghams, and includes some unusual Ogham letterforms, in particular the hashed double-R letter in the word "CERROCCS" that is not yet encoded in Unicode.The inscription has an X-shaped letter in two places. As the stone does not stand in situ, and is in quite bad condition (broken into two pieces), it is not evident which way up the stone originally stood, but my feeling is that it would have been more legible to have the Ogham inscriptions oriented correctly (UDSGQI reading up the left edge and ULCAGNI reading up the right edge) and the Latin inscription misoriented (reading vertically up from the base). Along three corners is carved the longest Ogham inscription known from Scotland, extending over 3m (Fraser 2010, 112). Ogham Stones (95) Ogham is the earliest form of writing in Ireland, it dates to around 4th century A.D. and was in use for around 500 years. The stone is erected in the middle of a grass island at a junction on the road between St Endellion and Port Quin. There is also the fact that it would be impossible to change the order of letters in ogham, given that it is a numbered series of strokes. Roughly 400 known ogham inscriptions are on stone monuments scattered around the Irish Sea, the bulk of them dating to the fifth and sixth centuries.Their language is predominantly Primitive Irish, but a few examples record fragments of the Pictish language.Ogham itself is an Early Medieval form of alphabet or cipher, sometimes known as the "Celtic Tree Alphabet". The stone is situated on the north side of the west end of the church. The divinatory meanings are usually based on the tree ogham, rather than the kennings of the The twenty standard letters of the Ogham alphabet and the five McManus (1991) is aware of a total of 382 orthodox inscriptions. The letters F and S would also have to be changed. Ogham letters are merely straight strokes arranged in groups along a line, as in the instance on this fragment, and mostly contain the name of the person in whose honour such stones were erected." Mr. Kerry, of Puttenham, has not hesitated to declare it to be a portion of a Runic stone bearing Ogham characters. The later scholastic inscriptions have no definite endpoint and continue into the Middle Irish and even Modern Irish periods, and record also names in other languages, such as Old Norse, (Old) Welsh, Latin and possibly Pictish. The Ogham alphabet is made up of a series of strokes along or across a line. It has been argued by Richard Cox in A rare example of a Christianised Ogham stone can be seen in As well as its use for monumental inscriptions, the evidence from early Irish sagas and legends indicate that ogham was used for short messages on wood or metal, either to relay messages or to denote ownership of the object inscribed.
