1. Continued research and characterization of PCV2 remains of major interest among swine practitioners, researchers and producers. Lymphoid depletion at multiple sites, chronic lymphohistiocytic to granulomatous inflammation, and an erosive bronchiolitis with fibrosis are characteristic. They have a wide host range, including pigeons, psittacidae, finches, geese, ducks, and pigs. Consequently, most abortions are near the end of gestation.
Porcine circoviruses are quite hardy in the environment and in organic substrates. Litters with dead fetuses of varying sizes, including mummified fetuses, along with stillborn and healthy pigs born to first-parity gilts, are the hallmark of porcine parvovirus. Activated macrophages appear to be permissive for viral replication and persistence.Pigs infected with PCV2 develop viremia of variable duration, with replication and persistence most extensive in macrophages and monocytes of lymphoid organs and lung. An apparent immune-mediated sequel to viral (perhaps PCV2) infection, porcine dermatopathy and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS) is sporadically reported. However, anti-inflammatory agents and/or antimicrobials are sometimes used with some success in groups of pigs experiencing disease. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) will confirm the presence of virus but does not confirm the presence of disease.
Some of the treatments mentioned may be prohibited in some countries. Affected litters contain fresh and autolyzed dead pigs, weak infected pigs, and healthy, uninfected pigs that often develop respiratory disease within a few days of birth.
Affected pigs usually die; clinical survivors are severely stunted; non-clinical pigs in the same groups perform quite well.
